I found something odd in the garden - help?

Hi,
Sorry I don't have a photo but I was moving 20 cubic metres of soil at the weekend (not that you'd want to see that!) and when I got about 1m down from the top I found a number of cream-coloured caterpillar-type things. They appeared to have about 6 legs near the head? and a darker blue-ish/black shape inside them at the other end. They were about 6mm in diametre and about 20- 25mm long. They were all curled into a semi-circle.
Any ideas what they were/are?
I wish I'd got my camer out but in the mud and pouring rain I didn't want to risk it.

Beetle larvae, may bugs/ cockchafers or something? Think vine weevils are smaller. I found loads in my garden when I re-turfed.

They are beetle larva. One of the Scarabaeidae likely Cockchafer Melolontha melolontha although several species within the family with similar larva. Hope you put them back
