am I seeing things

Hello everybody,
this is my first post with w a b as I have just joined and let me tell you why.
I have always enjoyed wildlife since childhood(I'm 43 now) and to see an animal or bird inthe wild is fantastic,However on my journey home tonight around 1am ( i'm a truck driver) I had my eyes peeled for owls, foxes, and Badgers of which I see many almost every night ,well maybe not every night but I have seen lots and had the misfortune one night of killing a barn owl .
Anyway tonight near market weighton in e yorks I saw what I first thought was a young Badger but as I got closer the animal running across the road was an Otter no mistake.
I didnt know of any streams around those parts that could support an Otter but later learned from a workmate that londesbrough hall had some lakes in its grounds so I am guessing thats where it was from.It has made my night and thats why I am sat here tired after a long journey in the wagon writing this at 1.30 in the morning instead of being asleep.

Re: am I seeing things

A very warm welcome to WAB from me.

That was an excellent sighting and one I am a tad envious of. I have seen them on a couple of occasions in the sea off the North Scottish coast but nowhere else (and that was over ten years ago).

As aeshna5 has stated, they are doing well and popping up all over the place.

John

Re: am I seeing things

Hi and welcome from me too.
That must have been great to see. I've only ever seen captive ones.

Re: am I seeing things

G'day Yambang!
Great story!
I know that feeling well, ie when you should be thinking of sleep, but you've seen something that makes you buzz!
And what a fantastic thing to see!
I'm lucky I supppose, in that I've spent a fair amount of time in Scotland, and seen a few Otters in lochs, but I've yet to see one in England, even though I hear (personally and professionally) that they are bouncing back, so to speak!
Welcome to WAB, the best site on the web, and please do tell us of any more nocturnal sights from your wagon!
Cheers
Doug

Re: am I seeing things

Otters are indeed a special sight. I do wonder if a lot of the bigcat sightings are Otters..Any way there are lots of waterways around that area that support Otters the Wolds area seems to have plenty, Many of my fly fishing buddies around there have seen them. They have been reported on the many stillwater fisheries around there as well as the rivers and dykes.

Re: am I seeing things

Otters do appear to be doing well at the moment, there has been a few sightings along the Thames near here. Only seen them in Scotland so far, but I'm sure its only time before I see one here.
