The RSPB are running something called "Homes For Wildlife" (there was a 2 page ad in this month's Gardener's World).
You can sign up online, and basically they will be doing a nationwide wildlife monitoring project which everyone can take part in. This site seems a great place to increase awareness of this.

Yes, I'd registered for this, and recieved an email about it a few days ago. After filling in a short questionairre about your garden it provides a list of things you could further do to improve it. I have to say I was a bit sceptical on starting the questionairre as I thought I catered pretty well for wildlife, but the suggestions included quite a few that I hadn't thought of. I've printed them off, and it gives a good list of projects to work on over these quieter months. Give it a go!
