| | | Need a bit of advice. Not sure I'm in the right area to post this but it's a bit of a combination question. I've been in my garden today having a bit of a tidy up and discovered that under my nyger seed feeder there appears to be lots of little nyger seedlings growing. Now I was wondering whether it would be ok to let them grow or should I remove them because they are not an indigenous species? If it's alright I was thinking that the plants might be nice left for the finches etc. What do you think? ww |

| | | Re: Need a bit of advice. I am not sure how tall they will grow or whether they will flower and set seed. The last I doubt. However if they are not in the way and you don't mind them then let them grow. Everything in the garden does not have to be indigenous. The main thing with a garden is to enjoy it and have plants that please you. If at the same time you can give some thought to wildlife, birds, bees, other insects and anything else that uses the garden, then even better.

| | | Re: Need a bit of advice. if you want thistles everywhere then leave them. you can even harvest the seeds, dry them and use for the birds next year. but it might take a long time! have you noticed how many seeds there are on one plant? thousands! |

| | | Re: Need a bit of advice. My nyger feeder overhangs my lawn and, although I can't actually see any signs of plants growing, the area under the feeder has recently become very raised and spongy. Presumably the seeds might be starting to grow under the surface. Not quite sure what to do, if anything, but it looks like I might have to write off that area of lawn!

| | | Re: Need a bit of advice. I looked up nyjer seed plants on the net.Scientific name 'guizotia abyssinica'. Oil seed family. Not related to thistles and are a commercial crop mainly from Ethiopia. They are a yellow flowering plant and can grow up to 7 FEET TALL! So I might need to dig them up before they get to my height 5'10"!! :-)ww |
