| | Cambridge Wildlife I don't know if this will work, but I'll give it a try.
I thought that I might try starting a forum on good places to watch wildlife close to Cambridge (since I'm pretty much stuck in the place due to not driving) - however this may completely flop if none of you are Cambridge residents.
I'll start off with a few places I often go to:
Coldham's Common - Found a pair of Great Crested Grebes on the small lake on the Newmarket Road side of the common just today. I haven't seen them displaying yet but who knows (you get terrific sights of them because of the small scale of the lake).
Fields behind Addenbrooks Hospital - despite looking like completely barren farms, I've actually benn able to spot a few nice things. A heron, kestrels, sparrowhawks, green and great spotted woodpeckers (on the other side of Long Road bridge), and scores of hyperactive skylarks. The hedgerows east of the fields leading into Trumpington provide a huge amount of hedgerow birds - lovely to listen to them singing. In the area I've also seen a fox, muntjak deer at night, and I have a feeling that there are water voles in the area...
Wandlebury - south of Cambridge - see a variety of birds and animals - spectacular burnet moths in the summer on the chalk grassland patch. However i prefer the place for the scenery rather than the wildlife. Magical snowdrops and achonites in their thousands at this time of year.
I have other places I like to go, but I'll wait and see if anyone else is interested before carrying on.
Once again I hope this hasn't completley failed.
p.s. I'd be interested if people just described some of their local areas - who knows, I might end up in that neck of the woods one day, and it's always interesting to here what pepole are able to find close to their homes,

| | | Re: Cambridge Wildlife Cherry Hinton Hall - Kingfishers, occasional Heron (goes in sping as ducklings are numerous), Greater spotted Woodpecker, Jays, Canadain Geese in Winter, watervoles, Firecrest, wren, Foxes, Tawny and Barn owls, plus the inevitable ducks, swans and squirrels.
Therefore it is a great place for wildlife on your doorstep.

| | | Re: Cambridge Wildlife Milton Coutry Park - Swans (with cygnets last and this year), Great crested grebes, ducks of various kinds, and warblers in the reed beds. Plus blue/coal/great tits, chafinches, chitchats, blackcaps in the wood parts of the park. |

| | | Re: Cambridge Wildlife Try the new reedbeds at Over, the River Great Ouse and Fen Drayton Lakes. All of these are accessible from Cambridge on the 15A bus. I do most of my walking and spotting in that area. I too don't drive and either bike or bus.
