| | | New take-away in our village Over the winter months a local farmer has excavated a field to make a fishing pond - less of a pond really, more of a stream as the local brook has been diverted to flow through it. I notice that it is now visited regularly by a couple of herons who think that this is a great place for ready-meals. |

he could try a thin line of cotton, but just in case he doesn't keep an eye out- if you find any dead ones, report him!!!

Should, I suppose, be to the benefit of wildlife generally - look out for outbreaks of water beetles ... |

The same land owner has another pond in the adjacent field but I've not seen the herons there before - there must be plenty of money in it. I have to say though that the new pond is a vast improvement on the old field which was planted with some rather tatty Christmas trees that never got sold. The only problem that I can see is that the field/pond is at the bottom of a fairly steep hill and over the years a couple of over enthused motorists have launched themselves into it - they'll get one hell of a shock if they do it now!
The ground is still rather bare due to the spoil removed from the pond but it shouldn't be that long before it is a real wildlife haven. |

| | | Re: New take-away in our village I find these fishing ponds/lakes suprisingly good for Dragonflies especially when they are newly created.
The Black-Tailed Skimmers really enjoy the new exposed mud on the shorelines.
They always stock these ponds with plenty of fish, enough to keep both the anglers and the Herons happy. |
