Sorry, the culprit is most likely a rat. They often make a small hole in the top of the shell but I have seen rat left overs with no hole in. Rats are the most likey ones to leave a pile of shell in the garden.
If it`s nocturnal then a rat is almost certain. If diurnal a small possiblity of grey squirrels.
You need to keep watch over the site to be sure,
