I have an 8GB Seagate C/F PHD in my 5D and the camera always tell me that I have 999 shots left. I have heard many stories of microdrives failing spectacularly, but decided to try one after seeing them on sale for £34. No problems as yet.

Microdrives do require slightly more gentle handling, I used to have one that was accidentally stood on, went the way of kaput as the casing had bent inwards disrupting the drive, I expect a cf card would have been fine.
