| | | Using Viewranger on a mobile phone Someone has recently given me an half decent touchscreen mobile phone (with GPS) and I am thinking about getting Viewranger installed on it. I'm not great with technology and therefore need to be sure in my mind just what Viewranger does before I proceed. Basically what I am after is an OS map (at least 1: 50 000) on the screen with a blob showing me where I am at any given time. Anything beyond this will be a bonus. Is this what it does?
Also, does GPS on a mobile phone need a mobile phone or wireless signal to work? I hope not.
Thanks, Chris |

| | | Re: Using Viewranger on a mobile phone connection depends on the application, on some you can cashe the data when connected to wifi and so not need to use 3g when out and about
I more often than not just use the google earth or google map app, does its job very efficiently on the desire hd and does not need a connection.
Be warned though having gps on can some times dramatically shorten your battery time between charges, so if your planning on being out and about for a long time, take a spare battery if you on an iphone then you would need a back up phone as the battery is not replicable or you could use a battery booster add on to charge on the go

I discovered today that the phone does indeed have a map app' on it on which shows my location with a nice red blob that moves as I do. However, as a keen hill-walker Viewranger allows me to use OS maps which will give me the detail I'm after (not cheap, £90 for 1: 50 000 coverage of Britain).
I might be really dumb here, but what is 3G?
Thanks, Chris | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
