Can you post a link to a site that sells these hoods? A spare would be handy in the event that the Nikon hood should be lost/broken/stolen by fairies?
Thanks in advance,

The reasoning is that once you get to lenses weighing 6 pounds and upwards, lens makers have decided to use stronger materials to support the weight of these optics, whether the camera/lens combination is stood upright on the ground, or the hood is reversed on the lens for transportation. They are also more resilient to bumps and knocks than the aluminium hoods, as well as being lighter.
Lenses of this size don't have filter threads at the front element, so universal screw-in hoods won't attach, and as these lenses don't sell in quantity, I can't see a third party going to all the trouble and expense to set up dies to make plastic versions. As mentioned above, at less than 10% the cost of the lens, it's not a bad deal.

HW | is this true... all that money for a lens hood? if so it costs more than my camera.

jm | And a good deal more than my marriage licence, and that has held good for nearly 40 years.

jm | carbon fibre is expensive - i still dont see why it's necesary in this application as plastic is strong enough and just as light.
