There are lots of people on here who use the 105mm very successfully for this purpose.
As for a 1.4 telecon with it I couldn't say as I use the Sigma 150mm macro. It takes a 1.4 telecon very well. I'm sure someone with the 105mm will be able to tell you. The advantage of the 105mm over the 150mm is that the 105mm is considerably lighter and as such will be easier to handhold. I don't think there is much to choose image quality wise between the 105mm and the 150mm

You do have to get close to the subject to get the frame-filling shots, but as long as you are patient and careful in your approach you should be fine. I've never used a teleconverter but there may be some situations with more flighty insects when one would come in handy.

| | | Re: sigma 105 macro To me, mobility is no problem and I like the challenge of having to creep through the grass to get a full frame shot of that timid insect, but I'm aware that some people don't enjoy getting all close and personal, and for that, a 150mm or something is probably better.
I have managed to capture many insects quite effectively with my Siggy 105mm. Here are a few examples;
No one can ever make your decision for you, but I highly rate this lens.

| | | Re: sigma 105 macro I've used the Sigma 105mm with a 1.4 T.C.
Here's a pic taken using an Olympus E510, Sigma 105mm and ZD EC-14:
I think the combo works quite well.
Enjoy your new lens, I'll watch for your pics.
