Both drives were absolutely fine, it was the casing/power supply that caused the problem.... thankfully easily remedied by my OH. The 250 gb one is now inside the pc so that should go on without a hitch. The 500gb one is in the new case but everything on it will be backed up from now on

Turns out the Lacie power and cases commonly break down and especially when using the firewire ports which I was.
