| | | Re: Boil in the bag meals I tried the Wayfayer Boil-in-the Bag meals on my last cycling tour in Swaledale last September and was camping for 4 nights. I wanted something simple to cook as I was using a Swedish Army Trangia cooker and 8 weeks prior to the cycling trip, I went to Millets. I got 4 packs of various menu and 1 sweet which was a very sweet chocolate pudding.
I can recommend them, although for the price very good. The guy in Millets did recommend some chicken meal and was delicious I must say. I'm walking the Coast to Coast Walk this spring (hoping) and I have to decide which stove I'm taking (gear check-list is the biggest headache ) But will be taking 3 packs and re-supply along the way.
Yes, I can recommend them. I will find out about the Chicken menu that was recommended by the friendly Millet's assistant.
This is the one....Wayfayrer Chicken Dopiaza Curry
There is one thing about camping (are you camping) is the air fresh that will drive your hunger pangs nuts

| | | Re: Boil in the bag meals Thanks alot for the reply. I'm fishing not camping, but when i go its for 24-48 hours so need a bit of grub. These just caught my eye as i could do away with my cooking set and just heat them up in my kettle when i get a jetboil one |

| | | Re: Boil in the bag meals There are several quick cook rice or pastas avalaible in supermarkets which I take with me when I go camping. I then just add a jar of pasta sauce or tin of chicken or beef curry. I just throw it all in one pan and heat it up. It is bulkier than the dried food but i think you get a bigger meal size and it works out slightly cheaper.

I really go off food when trekking. It's worried me because I should be really upping the calories. I've queried why it should be on other forums, and been told that it's the hard physical exercise, and they have the same problem.
My typical menu for the day - carrying a 30+lb pack:
Breakfast:
Coffee followed by a packet of instant custard.
Miday:
Coffee plus 2 oatcake biscuits.
Evening:
5 desert spoons of red lentils boiled with 5 spoons of bulgar wheat, and a packet soup stirred in (usually leek and potato). Coffee

Will have to see i our local camping shop sells them |

I also have two basic rules for provisions when trekking:
1) Don't carry water eg hydrated meals - there's plenty to be had in the burns.
2) Don't carry air, eg bread or Puffed Wheat - it's far too bulky

| | | Re: Boil in the bag meals On my 1990,91 & 92 Coast to Coast Walk crossings, always camping (being tight...joking ) I would cook baked beans, egg and mash potato and cream rice & fruit cocktail for dessert and down to pub for 4 pints.
Nowadays, I have a better paid job, single laddie, no children and own house, I can afford them Wayfayrer Boil-in-the Bag meals.

If I do get one, the Trangia is up for sale.

| | | Re: Boil in the bag meals If you want some posh nosh, have a look at the Look What We Found meals.
Wet food again, so not for multi-day backpacking, but interesting recipes and what I've had has been pretty tasty. On the downside, they're probably quite expensive compared to other options and the portions can be a bit on the small side IMHO. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
