Jim | Aye Jim, Got one today! I will give it a test tonight and let you know my verdict. As far as build quality goes its excellent so hopefully it will perform ok. My main use will be down in our woodland watching badgers etc if possible. Its VERY small too so will easily fit in my jacket pocket.
Cheerio

I'd be interested to know how you get on, Brian. It sounds like a real bargain.

However, not wishing to pee on your bonfire, but i have always been told or of the impression that anything 'night vision' be it monocular, binocular, scope, sights etc....are a complete failure or waist of time unless you spend around £2000 plus?...
Which i admit is a real shame as i think we would ALL love a decent night vision optic of some kind.....i do hope this thing works and i will buy one in a flash if it does but dont hold your breath!
They are all over ebay....all chinese made (which like bins need avoiding) and all very very cheap....
google the 'real' kit and you will see you need a second mortgage for the real deal....well....at least you used to! maybe things have moved on?...
Good luck
Dan

Dan | I understand what your saying Dan, I have just spent approx £10.000 on Canon camera gear/Wimberley etc which is in another league but thought i'd give these a try for now
I intend getting the Canon nightvision image stabilising Bins later in the year (they drop in price in january last year they had £300 off in the states)
Cheers I will let you know how i get on

| that price bracket is for the starlight scope / noctron etc as used by snipers, comando and what have you - this is an image intensifier set up which gathers all the ambient light and uses it to see by. This is ideal for military applications as it doesnt radiate and thus cant be counter detected.
cheaper gear tends to be based arround active IR ilumination - where by the night vision equipment has an IR torch and turns this into visible light - which is why everything looks green and fuzzy , and your depth perception gets screwed up.
Decent night scopes in this range tend to be arround 400 notes, tho some monoculars are cheaper - ex russian millitary surplus gear can also be had for about 200 notes.
the trouble with the really cheap stuff is that their IR iluminators tend to be really weak and thus the range is bobbins - you can get round that however by fitting a IR filter to a spot lamp and using it to provide extra illumination.
some ultra cheap "night scopes" are not night scopes at all but just normal monoculars or binoculars with a larger than average objective - this gathers a bit more light but is generally useless except on brightly moonlit nights.
all in all the aldi thing could be a bargain , but check out the full spec before you part with your dosher - and dont expect noctron standard beformance.

Well 1st impressions are pretty good, the weather was pretty bad last night so didn't venture into the forest but i managed a stroll down our farm track in total darkness without any problems. I would say the range would be improved with better IR spotlight but the image quality is certainly usable. I think it will be ideal for when i'm in the woods/up a tree etc with a range of around 100ft (it doesn't magnify much) i wear glasses so it took me a while to sort the focus out but once done i could see a couple of Roe deer in the field and some great toads!.
I will hopefully get a dry night soon so i can get into the forest and give it a good test. Am i glad i bought it? Yes, its an ideal starter scope and will be great fun! I will still be getting a top of the range Nightvision set up as it has given me the bug (don't all wildlife watching gadgets?) and means i can continue watching long after the sun goes down.
Cheers
