And cheers Rob, i was unaware of MAPMATE and will probably kick myself now when i find out its more suited to my needs but hey.
Does it still link to the NBN etc which i would not want to do without?

Recorder is the program used by NBN and others like the Ecological Data Centres.
Mapmate (don't confuse with Memory Map, used to manage mapping and so on on your GPS) is a program that has the species dictionaries and so on to record observations. If the data has to go to (and it should do) the NBN or Data centres, it will have to be manipulated.
Gill, I would like to PM you about nesting bird surveys, if we can get to a sensible answer it might be useful to post a seperate thread with some answers.

Thanks Dan,
I don't mind PM or here its all good!! Its just that BBS mapping can be quite complex in that you have tp plot all the species that you see, how many which gender is you can abd what they are doing when you saw them and my main worry doing it electrnically is that it won't be fast enough...... |

I agree that this is an important thread and want to continue with it. |

Two points are that it is not a completely simple piece of software, I would say it is rather like describing what a Swiss Army knife is for, and that you probably need to see the software being used by someone doing something similar to what you want to do.
I hope this fits with what you would like to say Gill, add and or contradict to anything I have said. |

| | | Re: Recorder 6 users. I voluneered at my LBRC (local biological record centre) for a few months and became an unwilling recorder 6 expert in some respects! I know alot of the pitfalls of recorder anyway! And there are many! An example is you need to supply the date that any recorder moved into their house....rather pointless. It does what it is meant to do though and stores data. I use mapmate as part of my MSc also but found it rather difficult using that after recorder as it doesn't have options to store certain things and has an odd way of using sites where you can't use more than one grid reference with one site when clearly most sites have many grid references grrr. Anyway I'll stop ranting, if you need any help with recorder 6 I'll certainly try! It has been a wee while since I used it though.
