| | | Re: Buying from USA I often purchase items from the USA but only if I am unable to get the item(s) in the UK. Might look attractive but by the time you add up the import duties, VAT and customs handling charges it is just not financially viable if you can purchase in the EU.

| | | Re: Buying from USA Years ago I bought a Nikon 200mm f4 AIS micro lens from B&H Photovideo NY, and saved a fortune compared to a used lens in the UK. But these days tax seems to be higher. I recently imported some microscope objectives, and got hammered. Firstly you pay shipping, which can be substantial. Then you pay a customs handling fee to the courier (Royal Mail in my case). Then you pay a customs duty. Then you pay VAT. To really rub salt in to the wound, the VAT is payed on all the other payments. HMRC really screw us for all they can get.
So, an item can work out a lot more expensive than you might think. And then there is the warranty. Some warranties are not international. Nikon aren't.
Generally it is possible to save money, but not much, and there is the hassle. |

| | | Re: Buying from USA The differences seem to vary according to the type of product...
I've been checking some particular models of camcorders and the UK price is +£200 or so on the US price at BH, on their website there is a delivery calculation to your address using UPS and I assumed this included customs handling etc. but you would need to pay the 17.5% VAT on the total price including the delivery charge on receipt of goods. Your point about warranties is interesting, that would have to be verified before actually considering a purchase though. |

| | | Re: Buying from USA Hi Sanderling, have you googled info for buying from the USA, I'm sure there will be lots of info.
