| | | Re: On the subject of books.. If you enjoy descriptive writing about the English countryside and it's natural history, then can I recommend 'The Peregrine' by J. A. Baker?
Written in the late 60's, it's an account of the author's attempts to watch wintering peregrines in the south east of England.

| | | Re: On the subject of books.. I just finished reading Daniel Quinn's "Ishmael", lent to me, an old book, about a man's conversation with a captive gorilla about man and agriculture.
Also am re-reading The Wind in the Willows! and
Richard Mabey & Tony Evans The Flowering of Britain. Very good read about plant communities.

| | | Re: On the subject of books.. Seeing Richard Mabey mentioned reminded me of his biography of Gilbert White, a really interesting read. And has there ever been a better book on natural history than White's 'Selborne', or perhaps that is too obvious. |

| | | Re: On the subject of books.. I've recently re-read 'The Cottage Book' and 'The Charm of Birds', by the long gone former Liberal Home Secretary, Sir Edward Grey. Both are good, but 'The Charm of Birds' is perhaps the best insight into British birdsong I have ever come across. Written in 1927, I consider it to be the definitive book on the subject and has therefore not been bettered.
Regards, Chris
