Red face Spur of the moment purchase ...

Went out today, walking passed the local High Street camera shop, spotted a very nice special "special" offer, you know the hype.

Got meself a Fuji FinePix S5700 for £149.97 ... OK, may not sound a bargain as it stared out at £119.99, but, I did get the accessory kit which consists of case and overnight charger with four AA Ni-MH batteries, plus two 1Gb SD cards ... I think I did rather well.

The last camera I bought was a Samsung Digimax 230, and it was £150-ish. Still have it.

I was in the market for something new, inexpensive, and a little more updated ... I'm still grinning, I don't believe what this thing is capable of.

I hope I get some good pictures, once I've mastered some of the basics.

Any comments, good or bad about the camera, greatly appreciated.

Re: Spur of the moment purchase ...

Sounds like a great deal to me. . . I do not know a great deal about that particular camera but I have read some review in Digital Camera magazine and they seem to praise it a great deal. . . There will be other WABers that will have used it and give thier honest opinions. . Looking forward to seeing some pics from you soon. . .

Re: Spur of the moment purchase ...

This was my first camera i used last year to take pictures for the forum....I found it quick and easy with quite good macro settings...Just what i needed to be out and about capturing fungi..You will find like myself the more adventurous you become in getting that perfect shot in other wildlife subjects you might feel you will need to splash out on a slightly more expensive model..But until then have fun and enjoy...

Re: Spur of the moment purchase ...

Thats the camera I am currently using. Its great for macro on insects, fungi etc but not so good for birds.
Am currently saving for or good DSLR, either a Canon or Nikon.

Re: Spur of the moment purchase ...

For the last couple of years I have been using the S5500. Good camera with lot of settings. 10x optical aswell. Took some very good pictures, I am sure you will be fine with it. In my opinion good value for money.

Thumbs up Re: Spur of the moment purchase ...

Thanks for the replies folks ... just a little update.

I've been out & about an a few occasions, weather has not been great, I am rather pleased with most of me pics.

paulchandler6, you are right, it is excellent at super macro mode ... took a few 'practice' shots, one of my keyboard, damn, I could see the dust & I use the keyboard everyday ... need new reading glasses I think.

juliejam, yep, I see the shortcomings already for birdies, but as you say, great for macro stuff ... am already saving for a 'proper' DSLR.

Re: Spur of the moment purchase ...

I was going to respond with, "Dimitar Berbatov" ....

But seriously, Fuji macros are often on a par with Nikon and a lot cheaper () certainly better in my limited experience than an equivalent Canon. Well done - don't worry about the birds - it won't be long before the insects are about in numbers and far more interesting.
