Before buying one ...can i have your views on using a Polarising
Filter..and do they really make a difference to your shot overall.

Hi Julie,
Yes, in certain circumstances polarisers can have a big impact. Perhaps their biggest effect is to deepen blue skies and to make white clouds really stand out from a blue sky. They have maximum effect if you're standing at 90 degrees to the sun i.e. if the sun is shining on your side. Polarisers also makes greens more vibrant and help to cut out reflections on water.

Hi Julie.
A polarising filter was essential for my recent Cornwall coastal path images ... for the reasons Matt explained. Do make sure you buy the circular rotating type though. 
They are well worth having ... if used correctly

A polariser will loose you between one and two stops of light, so be aware of this characteristic. They can also produce a slight blue cast, so you may need to warm-up the image in post processing.
As mentioned above, they can remove the reflection from foliage, water and glass, thus saturating colours, but won't remove reflections from polished metal or mirrors.
The polarising filter is a versatile addition to your bag, but it has its drawbacks as well as advantages.
