| | | Tripod Advice I have been looking to buy for a half decent, light and cheapish tripod and was wondering if anyone out there has a Manfrotti Modo maxi or mini as I am thinking of buying one. Would you recommend them and if not what tripod would you advice me to get |

I think you would regret it in the long run. In my opinion and it's only my opinion you would be better off with a decent one that's not too costly. I use a Manfrotto 055CL Classic Tripod fitted with a Manfrotto 488RC2 midi-ball head with quick release plate. can't remember the exact price but if you look it up on a few sites that I won't mention you should find a price for it.
It's not the cheapest or lightest tripod around but neither is it the dearest. It's quite capable of supporting my 400D with Sigma 50-500mm attached. I also use it with my Sigma 150mm macro lens. If you are using a telephoto lens a sturdy tripod is an essential item in my opinion. Of course it is possible to hand hold a long telephoto lens as some on here do very successfully but I'm afraid my hands aren't steady enough to do this.
it's surprising what difference a good sturdy tripod and head can make

The tripod is very compact, stable enough for my needs most of the time and the low level setting option has come in handy. The trigger cam-lock for the pan/tilt head has seemed to loosen up slightly in use but it still locks firmly.
For use with a compact/bridge type camera I think theyre very good, but a DSLR setup would be way too much for it to handle. If you have any specific questions about the tripod feel free to ask and i`ll do my best to help.

| | | Re: Tripod Advice I'm with Ollie here, it is false economy to buy a cheap tripod. Buy the best you can afford. The 055 is pretty good and with a decent ball head will take a lot of punishment. I f you can stretch to it the 055X pro is excellent. I have just upgraded to this and wish I had done so sooner.
Remember you are committing your camera and lens to this piece of kit. it needs to be good!! |

| | | Re: Tripod Advice Totally agree when it comes to heavy DSLR setups, but for a lightweight setup like mine a heavy tripod would be overkill. As Ron hasn`t mentioned the type of camera he plans to use on the tripod its hard to say whether it would/wouldnt be suitable for his requirements.

| | | Re: Tripod Advice Hi everyone and many thanks for the advice. I have a Sony Alpha and several lenses, one or two of which are fairly heavy. I will take Ollie's advice and go for his option as I need a sturdy tripod to cope with rough terrain and windy conditions.

| | | Re: Tripod Advice Wise move Ron, sounds as though you`ve got a fair few quids worth of kit, so it would be unwise to skimp on the tripod

| | | Re: Tripod Advice Cheers Digiscoper62 and thanks for confusing me as I was about to take Ollie's advice. I also noticed this tripod, which looks a bargain but does anyone have any experience of it?? http://www.keh.com/OnLineStore/Produ...BCL=&GBC=&GCC= | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
