Handheld GPS receivers

Does anyone have experience of Handheld GPS receivers for use when out in the countryside?

I am interested in acquiring something portable that would give me OS coordinates (for reporting to a number of specialist recording organisations) and would generally help me navigate around wild places in the UK and on the Continent.

My knowlege of this kind of gadget is restricted to my Tom-Tom Go in the car for on-the-road navigation.

Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks in anticipation!

To answer your question.
I find that the Garmin etrex is great for the track that you are talking about. Also it is cheap to buy at around £99. It should work in europe as this one does not have maps on it. If you spend a bit more you can get the one that you can download maps to.
It runs well on two rechargable batterys.
