I'd keep it at 400 or lower most of the time , 800 only when desperately needed - if you use 1600 or 3200 you will get lots of noise ( and yeah yeah I know there are pro level camera that are virtually noiseless at 1600 but i'm thinking of the average consumer DSLR body here)

I have the Sigma lens (70-300mm f4-5.6 APO DG Macro), but do not use it very much. It has a certain amount of play in the barrel, which I find off putting. I find that my Canon 100-400mm f4/5.6 IS USM is of more use to me, although it pretty heavy. Using this lens gives the operator a work out at the same time!
I can see the attraction of the Canon 75-300mm f4/5.6 at only £129, but wouldn't the version with USM be a better choice. It costs about £70 more. Canon also do an IS version for around £389 and a DO of the same lens at £839. If you can afford it always go for the L glass.
