| | | My tree has gone rusty! One of the ash trees in my garden has gone rusty with orange lichen growing up one side.
Here is a close-up.
Someone posted something similar about a week ago but I really don't know if it is the same. Someone suggested an algae called Trentepohlia abietina and someone else suggested one of the Caloplaca lichens, but I can't find anything the same as this on the Internet.
Can anyone help?

There was an article about this in the most recent BSBI News (the newsletter of the Botanical Society of the British Isles), but I no longer have access to this so can't quote chapter and verse. But it was talkng about an alga. One or two local Ash trees show this rusty staining as well.

Dan | I'm also hoping that it is not serious for the tree. That's one of the reasons I'm asking.
BTW Dan, I'm married and old enough to be your Mum!

| Having searched on Trentepholia algae, I have found a similar picture on the Hainault Forest web site (excellent web site, BTW) at HAINAULT FOREST. Although there is no close-up, I think you are correct.
Glad to hear it is not harmful.
Many thanks,
