| | | Is this Polyporus umbellatus ? Another from my back catalogue, I have this as Polyporus umbellatus but would appreciate any thoughts or maybe even a confirmation ??
for scale you can see a sweet chestnut in the foreground, not placed as a prop this wood has beech oak and sweet chestnut amongst others ....
Thanks in anticipation |

Thanks in anticipation | It looks the business to me, and I have come across this very rare Polypore twice. When (month) did you find it ? That's the important question.
Underneath the ground should be quite a large tuber up to 1 metre big ! - just do not tell the local Chinese population as they will dig it up as it is very sought after in Chinese medicine.
Do ensure your County Fungus Recorder is informed.
Neil.
EDIT: Doubts are beginning to creep in - the more I look at those fronds in the right hand corner, the more I think Griffola, as they show hints of bruising darker, or is it my imagination ? The month it was found is vital !

| | | Re: Is this Polyporus umbellatus ? I think you are right to doubt Polyporus. This looks to have the fronds of Griffola rather than the individual (all be it fused) fruitbodies of the Polyporus.

Here is another view from a slightly different angle | Aha ! That definitely rules out P.umbellatus as this only appears in June/July.
