| | | How many guises are there for Stereum hirsutum, Hairy Curtain Crust? I am starting this thread off as I think WAB could collate a great collection of this very varied fungus, so please add your own finds.
I start with my photos of it at a very young to early middle stage of its development.
Enjoy..... |

I think this thread would have been more constructive if it was restricted to the genus Stereum rather than the species S.hirsutum which really only has two stages - the young bright orange resupinate stage followed by the hairy bracket stage.
(I would also like to see the Ascocoryne, Neobulgaria thread by Ditiola ? resurrected again as there were some very good comparisons there and I'm sure there are many newcomers who would find this interesting)

Neil. | ...but I have photos of S hirsutum and when posted on WAB the discussion is that they might this or .......????? so there might only be 2 stages, but there are plenty of different forms and colours.
A photo from you please.

Neil. | I agree Neil, I think that there is scope for a lot more focussed threads to help with ID's - that's why I come up with ones like the "Fungi on Holly" one which can help anyone who can recognise a holly leaf frankly . The whole issue needs careful working out though - it is in the nature of sites like this that nuggets can get lost among the day to day stuff.
On a different issue (and running the risk of being called an "elitist" ) are we really reduced to looking at how different Stereum hirsutum may appear? There is more about, even at this time of year . . . .
Reminds me of a former birdwatching friend ( very Yorkshire); we were in a hide once and some rather posh 'dudes' with all the latest equipment, books etc came in . . . "Anything interesting about?" one of them asked - without missing a beat came the response "Aye - there's coot!" . . . .
Chris
