| | Mosses on fungi for suggestion(s) Hello here are two small fungi, both found growing in moss ontop of walls in Exeter.
The first (the scale is 1cm by the way)
..the second (even smaller, no noticeable stipe, though it could be hidden in the moss - bryum capillare? )
Any suggestions on either much appreciated...
Thanks Matt

Mal | I think they both are; the first could be one of several (possibly Arrhenia rickenii . . . . ) - but I would really need to do the microscopy to take it further; the second one looks very like Arrhenia retiruga though again that is not a definite ID
cheers
Chris

| | | Re: Mosses on fungi for suggestion(s) That was quick work chaps, I was kind of hoping an arrhenia would be in the running for one of them at least. Indeed the finder of the first (not I) suggested it might be a "leptogolussum".
Both of your suggestions look good Chris (caveats noted) - thank you.
I think I'll pass the samples onto Jeff Benn (the country recorder) rather than try and get to any conclusions ourselves ~ there isn't much material for a newby to play with..
Interesting little things anyway - the latter was only 50 yards from my house - I wouldn't have found it if I hadn't been checking the mosses and lichens very closely.
Matt

Matt | yes a potential problem arises in that Leptoglossum P. Karst. (1879) is now considered a synonym of the earlier genus Arrhenia, and to complicate things Leptoglossum (Cooke) Sacc. (1884) is considered a synonym of Microglossum
the former is a basidiomycete, the latter an ascomycete; the suggestion of Leptoglossum - clearly referring to the former - is not wrong, just a little out of date
