I'm not very experienced at fungi ID but it may be a Lepista species like maybe Lepista flaccida.

| | | Re: unidentified fungi Hmmmm, so definitely not in that department then, but I'm still sticking with Lactarius.
Unless somebody points out that those intermediate gills are wrong for Lactarius.

If you cut through the stem and the flesh is bright orange then you have Lactarius deliciosus, salmonicolor or deterrimus. All of those are mycorrhizal with Pine or Spruce - I've only ever found them close to conifers.

| | | Re: unidentified fungi If there are no Pine, it is safe to rule out my wild guess, but the reason I came up with it is because of the last photograph - it shows a specimen with a broken cap, unfortunately from a very tight angle, but you can just make out features that are reminiscent of L.deliciosus.
It cannot be this, but if you can, is there any chance of a shot showing the feature of one cut in half ?

Nick | Bu, bu, but that's boring, because it's what you'd expect to find this time of the year.

Dave | unfortunately not. I left them in the woods close to where i found them. never thought to cut them in half, mind you they were frozen stiff.
thanks for all your replies. i'll keep an eye open next time i'm up that way although i think the weather has put pay to finding any more for the time being. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
