| | | Re: Can this possibly be Stereum rameale? To be honest, I feel the differences between S.hirsutum and S.rameale or so slight, I just record them as the former. But really, this is something I need to do more work on.
My gut feeling is this is just S.hirsutum, but you could be right.

Neil. | I might as well stick my neck out but I do not think so Neil.
Alindsay, what kind of wood is the substrate? It is important to know!
Is the top image (with the smooth undersurface) the same 'crust' as the others? The others, if they are indeed a stereum sp. are more suggestive of S. subtomentosum to me.

| | | Re: Can this possibly be Stereum rameale? All the photos are from the same fallen branch I can't be specific about which tree it came from, but I was in a broad leaved wood in Bedfordshire (usually clay soil or chalk) |

| | | Re: Can this possibly be Stereum rameale? I think the wood could be Beech, not really sure if that is going to help though as I think 2 species could be involved here.
The original 3rd photo down is definitely a Stereum and there is clearly a hairy upper surface, but admittedly this is not restricted to S.hirsutum.

Neil. | But does it not have a narrow point of attachment Neil? That would rule out most Stereum sp and leave us with S. subtomentosum (which favours beech and yellows where rubbed -possibly seen in the 4th and 5th pics) or Trametes sp (?? pubescens but prob versicolor as I think they can be finely haired when young). | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
