| | | Tawny Grisette - Amanita fulva...wrong I.D Hello everyone
Well, I'm appearing useless as to identifying this little 'darling'. I thought (doh!!..dangerous thing for me to do ) I'd got it right this time. This is my second 'wrong' posting of this one...and corrected by Ken(thanks for the help Ken), how embarrassing is that !
Ken thought it was Psathyrella but to check on the forum. So, as directed by Ken, I'm putting this on the forum and open to suggestions...regarding the fungus , and not me needing a better pair of glasses
Thank you all ...once X squillions again....oh deary me
Jean

| | | Re: Tawny Grisette - Amanita fulva...wrong I.D OK - these are general comments and are not to be taken personally, Jean - see I even got your name right - Amanita fulva is in Amanita section Vaginatae (sometimes in the past treated as a separate genus - Amanitopsis)
- that section is partially defined as not having a partial veil - your fungus has clear fibrous veil remnants around the cap margin, with corresponding ones on the stipe . . . .
- those sort of fibrous remnants do not look right for Amanita in any case . . .
- Amanita fulva does of course have a universal veil which should show itself clearly as a basal volva - no evidence of a volva here . . .
- the only thing which might make you think fulva here is cap colour and stem colour - but that just isn't enough to base even a tentative guess on really - for example I would always expect fulva to show a distinctive plicate margin - the thin cap showing the pattern of the underlying gills
- again this a general point: if beginners want to progress at mycology (which is not an easy area of study - stick to birds and flowers if you want a simple(r) life!) you have to do more work than just take a snap in the field, stick it on here, sit back, let someone else do the work and label up your photograph . . . . read (and if necessary re-read) Help us to help you identify fungi
btw this is a Psathyrella - a spore print would have ruled out Amanita at stage one - and I for one cannot do Psathyrella ID's on what I can see here (there generally has to be nothing else about for me to turn to a Psathyrella in the first place, and given the sort of fungi I'm interested in there is never "nothing else about")
best wishes
Chris

| | | Re: Tawny Grisette - Amanita fulva...wrong I.D Thanks Chris...as ever, all helpful information for us 'newbies' and I do get your 'general' points ...and 'no', I won't be giving up on this...enjoy it too much, for all my mistakes! The more I learn the more it intrigues me
Regards
Jean
