| | | Fungus ID please, possibly a Waxcap? This specimen was photographed in early Jan all on its own under a few oak trees in parkland.
The cap was deliciously slimy, but I'm not sure if my ID as Slimy Waxcap(Hygrocybe irrigata) is correct .... so I hope someone can help.
Thanks in advance. |

| | | Re: Fungus ID please, possibly a Waxcap? At this time of year (with not much else about for agarics) and with the free gills, I would be drawn to Collybia (now Rhodocollybia).
The only reason I hold back from saying 'the Buttercap' is because the stem is a bit odd, but this could be due to the cold weather.

Apart from the stem being darker than normal, "Collybia (now Rhodocollybia)" feels a better fit than my earlier ID.
A great specimen though ......
Thanks

Looks a lot like Macrocystidia cucumis to me...
You did give it a sniff didn't you Alison?
Cheers,
Nick
Edit: Not with a slimy cap it isn't! Sorry, carry on with what you were doing.....

I did sniff and noted nothing significant.

| | | Re: Fungus ID please, possibly a Waxcap? I haven't come across M.cucumis for yonks, but that's a dammed good shout and I'm going to agree with you.
Putty or Cod Liver Oil are the smells one should be sniffing for.
Neil.
PS That was a very rushed guess with Buttercap - I never even bothered to see what size it was even. I had my chicken thighs on the go with chopped onion, chopped tomato's, finished off with double cream and a shot of Cointreau orange liqueur. And it was yummy.
Phew, just time to do a PPS - If it was slimy then perhaps it really is a Buttercap then.
