O.K..here we go! Regarding 'Larch in the area'....answer, YES, a little further along the path.

Regarding the Bracket....well, I've been back twice now. The first time I was horrified to see the area had been cleared to make way for a new woodland walk, complete with huge wooden frog. All the smaller logs were piled up next to the lake so I had a good look but no tree the size of the one in my shot. Maybe (I thought)..just maybe this wasn't the spot...but the 'tree' hasn't appeared on my walk back so either it was more hidden than I remember or the worst ...it's been axed

Now the major of the trees seem to be Alder at the lake side..some willow but mostly Alder, Birch...then Oak, Beech, Larch and Laurel.

I'll keep checking but that's all I have at the moment...oh, did find Scarlet Elf Cup, a first for me!

I had to fell a large Alder today that had become infected with the Alder Disease, Phytophthora alni, and although I already accept your tree is an Alder tree (therefor giving more weight to Andrea's suggestion of Inonotus radiatus) I decided to double check the bark on some of the branches and I'm in no doubt it is an Alder in your photo.

Thanks Neil for taking another look at my post..I'm still going to go and have another look...lots of Alder trees so that's looking about right!

That's such a shame regarding the diseased Alder, I came across an Alder recently and the sight of a tree appearing to 'bleed' was strange. At first I thought a sheep had hurt itself on the barbed wire by the tree because the sap was such a brilliant red. I've seen darker markings but never one that fresh and sticky...so I took a photo and put it on my Gallery.
