Fungus on fallen silver birch branch for ID please

I realise this specimen is well past its best (it looks like it has fungus growing on the fungus!), which is probably why I can’t find any similar photos on t’internet to ID it The branch fell from a tree in my garden a few weeks ago during strong winds and I’ve only today noticed this heavy and solid fungus had been growing from the branch – the indent in the branch in the photos is where the fungus was attached (the base of the stem of the fungus has birch wood attached to it where it must have torn off when it fell to the ground).

The cap measured 9cm and height (stem to cap) was 8cm. No distinctive smell to note, just an ordinary mushroom smell.

Any pointers even to genus level would be very much appreciated.

I'd googled 'Silver Birch fungus' and photos of Birch Polypore and Ganoderma were thrown up in the search, but I decided my fungus didn't look anything like those in any of the pics - probably because they were all nice, fresh specimens!
