| | | Help needed to confirm id of unusual coloured Daedalea quercina I am not 100% sure that this is Daedalea quercina because of the unusual rose/violet tinted colour. But I see that there is similar in the Gallery at Oak Mazegill - Daedalea quercina - Wildlife Photography
Can anyone confirm the id for me, a nervous beginner? Many thanks.

| | | Re: Help needed to confirm id of unusual coloured Daedalea quercina If this was growing on either Sweet Chestnut or Q.robur or petraea, then without doubt, this is Daedalea quercina - certainly looks like it.
This purple blotchy thing is interesting as I don't think I've come across it before, at least, not so obvious, so I searched the FRDBI to see if there is any mention - unfortunately not, but I did notice there is only one record of D.quercina on Sweet Chestnut since Oct 2007 at least, yet I have seen this twice on Sweet Chestnut.
One day I'll get my act together and send all my records in. |

| | | Re: Help needed to confirm id of unusual coloured Daedalea quercina Thanks for that. The tree trunk was so far gone that I couldn't id it, but there was a lot of oak (Q. petraea) around in the woods and sweet chestnut is common in the Plymouth area.

| | | Re: Help needed to confirm id of unusual coloured Daedalea quercina Taxonomically, Castanea is very close to Quercus; very many oak micro-fungi will happily hop over to sweet chestnut, and this is also true of a number of "oak-specialist" macro-fungi, like Fistulina . . .
