fungi id please

first post in here so go easy on the newbie.










i have recently taken an interest photographing fungi and came across these today. there were a few growing on the edge of a track / ditch between farmers fields. they were very delicate and approximately 125mm tall.

can any of you guys put a name to them please.

it's an ink-cap; these have now been placed in several genera, once they were all called Coprinus

perhaps the most likely candidate is Coprinopsis lagopus, but to be 100% sure you need to have details of habitat (whether on soil, attached to wood fragments etc) and most importantly you need to check the spores and other characters with a microscope

sorry - but a lot of fungi are not straightforward (and there are a lot of British ink-cap species - indeed the majority - which do not appear in the popular books); so I would call this "Coprinopsis sp., probably C. lagopus"

i googled Coprinopsis lagopus and visually it looks very similar. i guess if i am to get serious about fungi identification then i'll have to invest in a microscope. its surprising how similar a lot of the fungi are.
