| | | Re: HELP needed FUNGI I.D. Hi Jean, this looks like a slime mould - we need one of the experts...........!
Meanwhile, this may help: Eumycetozoa - Slime molds, True slime molds, Slime moulds, Eumycetozoans, Dictyostelids, Myxomycetes, Protostelids, Acrasiomycota, Dictyosteliomycota, Myxomycota, Ramicristates -- Discover Life
and : Gallery of Myxomycetes
Fascinating things indeed.
Maybe one of the Didymium species?
Cheers
Ken

Chris EDIT worth trying to grow on / sending to Kew: as far as I can tell this isn't recorded from Staffordshire (I'm assuming it was collected in that county, of course)

Nick | HI Nick,
I think you may have hit the nail on the head...so to speak ! Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. I've taken another photograph as my 'matchsticks...or nails' seem to have changed over the last 4 days. Whether that's because I haven't stored them correctly...or a change was due anyway...I'm not too sure. I've given them a spray mist of water to see what happens....if I've done the wrong thing I'm sure you'll all let me know !
With regards,
Jean

Chris EDIT worth trying to grow on / sending to Kew: as far as I can tell this isn't recorded from Staffordshire (I'm assuming it was collected in that county, of course) | Hello Chris,
Great link...thank you for that, very useful . And yes, definitely Staffordshire.
It looks as if Hargreaves wood, where the item was found has been left to run a little wild over the years. There are huge decaying trees as well as healthy but the good news is that the local council who own the woodland have begun to do conservation work to help it to 'breath' again. Some of my other posts were items from this woodland.
I decided to bring this little beauty home as I couldn't really photograph it on site without ending up in the stream! It's been kept in a small plastic box on damp kitchen towel...the only thing I could think of at the time.
Sending it to Kew sounds a very good suggestion....but how would you recommend packing it for the journey ?
I'm going to put an updated photograph on this posting later this evening....I'm not too sure if it's dried out a little or is changing.
Many thanks for the help,
With regards,
Jean

Jean | hi Jean
it would need to be thoroughly dried - placed in an old unsealed envelope near a radiator or in an airing cupboard would do it; moderate heat over a few days rather than 'cooking it . .
best
Chris EDIT - just occurred to me - of course if you do dry it and it develops a fenugreek/curry-like smell, then Phleogena is definitely what you have!
