| | | Is this sulphur tuft? Sulphur tuft, I'm told, is one of the easy ones but I'm still not sure...
Someone I didn't know said it's velvet shank and seemed very sure of it but it seems too small to me. The largest cap was no more than 3cm across and the stipes no more than 4cm. No noticeable smell.
I was busy photographing these while everyone else was looking at the arctic redpoll!

I'd say the person you didn't know was right on this one.
3cm is quite small but maybe they are young ones.

Someone I didn't know said it's velvet shank and seemed very sure of it . . . . . | It certainly is - that was my thought when all I had done was seen the thumbnails

| | | Re: Is this sulphur tuft? Thanks for that Mal, I didn't realise there was so much variation. I always picture velvet shank as similar to the ones that we found on the Clumber foray which were at least twice as tall and had caps about three times the diameter. The photo in my Collins looks nothing like these ones either, but I know identifying from photos can be tricky at times!
