| | | help please - bright yellow large mushroom clusters found today growing in clusters round the base of an unknown tree.
never seen these before, they are really yellow! Yellow flesh, yellow stems, yellow cap with nice semi-detachable brown scales. Cap ranging from 5-15cm, stems up to 8cm.
if I close my eyes and imagine hard, the smell is mushroomy but very faintly fruity-sweet, almost apply.
I looked in a couple of books but no joy at all. Any help really appreciated.
thanks, Anthony. |

| | | Re: help please - bright yellow large mushroom clusters I reckon P. squarrosa too, the squamules are more numerous than I would expect to see in P. aurivella. Also, there seems to be no viscose appearance to the cap that I would consider typical of P. aurivella. |

| | | Re: help please - bright yellow large mushroom clusters To say "... around the base of an unknown tree" is not good enough, surely you know if it was coniferous or deciduous ?
If a conifer, it may be a large Pholiota flammans, they can be up to 6cm across, maybe more.
If this is P.squarrosa, it has retained the yellow remarkably well and at this stage I would expect it to be more pale, but at the end of the day I suspect it is P.squarrosa. EDIT: Especially if it was growing in a cluster.
Neil.

Melanie | I've just cut every single Larch down to eliminate that minor anomaly.

| | | Re: help please - bright yellow large mushroom clusters pretty sure it's p.aurivella, thanks all (again!)
Neil, re:tree I am really not sure. It was brown and hard material at the base, with softer parts, sort of green-coloured extending from at the top. Does that help? Anthony |

You MAY be right opting for P.aurivela, - you have it in the hand, but it's far from certain, and dangerous to add this to a database.
