Did you prod it with your finger to see if it had a jelly texture?

If not why not?

Looks more like a Stereum to me

I really don't feel there's any need to be rude. Just don't answer at all.
Maybe I don't put all the info you "experts" need but I am interested in any real answers.
I took this photo a while ago and am gradually learning what to look for.
I found a picture via Google of Stereum Complicatum and the colour looks very similar.
Maybe that's as far as I can go!

I was not intending to be rude, but it can often be really difficult to ID fungi from photos, without some background information which is often easy to collect at the time when the photo is taken

With Stereum it is important to know if the fruit body bleeds red juice when cut or damaged and also if it is on deciduous wood or coniferous wood, and if on deciduous wood whether it is Oak or not. With this information it is then much easier to give the correct name.

Also with fungi that appear to be a Stereum always check with a hand lens to see if it has pore (tiny holes) on the underside (outside) as if it has, it is not a Stereum but one of the many resupinate Polypore fungi

Anyway, thankyou. I appreciate constructive advice. I think I get excited when I see so many different fungi in one place on one day and forget the things I should look for!!

I apologise totally for having upset you - I certainly don't have any wish to upset anyone's Sunday (if you leave out George Osborne, David Cameron and Rupert Murdoch and a few others . . . . . ); on a forum like this it is difficult to get some points across, which over a drink in a pub, looking at some photographs, would be much less confrontational . . .

however I do not agree that I was being unnecessary; the fact remains that a lot of your posts are of the "here's a picture what is it?" type frankly, which do imply others doing the work, don't they?

this selfsame image has appeared on an earlier thread: Another unidentified New Forest fungi

where I spent some time expanding on Nick C's correction of "fungi" to explain that to you; the fact that no-one was prepared to hazard even a guess at the identity of the fungus should have been a clue that there is really not enough evidence there to do so - nothing's changed

I have also been positive on other threads of yours - eg:

and on ones where there wasn't even an acknowledgement that you had seen the reponse:

where he points out the necessity of providing more information and as good as possible images; it appears that you are reluctant to pick fruitbodies, take them home, and do a little work with them (I might be incorrect here?); that can help considerably in naming things for you

you are kind of agreeing with my original point - you are not giving the information needed - which is a pity because it should be possible to do that; I also have never in print, online, or in life called myself an "expert" - indeed I refute the word as regards myself - there's perhaps a whiff of sarcasm in your use of the term

so apologies freely given where deserved - forums such as this do tend to make shades of grey difficult to communicate at times

I suupose I thought it was unnecessary as you could just ignore my posts where I fail to put enough info.

I will try harder in future to give more info. As I said I tend to forget to take notes when I'm out as the taking of the photograph distracts me.

The recent posts were of older photos I came across.
