unidentified fungus-help please!!

Hi everybody, I am a beginner at this but keen to learn. I picked this specimen on 01/12/11 in wild pasture land ( National Trust) on the North Devon coast. There were quite a few others spread around the fields but did not appear to be in clumps or rings. This one was still closed in its veil and was round and about 75 mils across. The cap was more of a uniform pale brown but as it has matured and opened over the last 2 days it has become slightly darker and patchy.It was and is quite dry feeling. The cut stem is brown. Spore print dark brown and it smells mealy or mushroomy. I cannot conclusively identify it from my books but suspect it's an Agaricus ssp- maybe Augustus? although it was in grass and not near woods . Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Mark

I`m a bit of a novice too but I can tell you that it is Agaricus sp. I tend not to spend too much time on them because there are so many and quite difficult to separate sometimes. There is always the microscopy route and you can learn quite a lot by observing the habitat. The different species do generally have distinguishing characteristics and a couple of good books can help to narrow it down.

Hi John, yes I can confirm that I have read that note. I don't want to know if it's edible, just want to know if I'm on the right track with identity and what it is. Thanks,Mark
