| | | Fungi herbarium at home Hello all
I seem to have collected a large number of unidentified material over the years and was wondering how other people 'managed' their dried material.

| | | Re: Fungi herbarium at home If you're anything like me John, start with a massive clean out of anything which is not labelled and you cannot remember where it came from as this would be of no use to anybody.
As for the rest, shoe boxes seem the most practical way to keep dried specimens, but check every 6 months just to make sure beetles have not invaded.

Neil. | Hi Neil
I had a similar clear out earlier this year and now keep separate boxes for locations, where each fungus is labelled, given a ID code and logged in an Excel spreadsheet.
Each (sealed plastic) box also contains sachets of silica gel which I attempt to re dry every 2 months ... or when I remember Some I give another 2 hours in the Stockli Dehydrator.
Hopefully some will get looked at this winter

John | why not just sending the whole unidentified stuff to Chris? He surely is bored now without all the small fungi having their winter sleep now
best regards,
Andreas

Mine are nowhere near as sorted as yours John, I dont have time and space.
But, my inside windowledge is full and I just use memory (at pres) for them all, put some in damp conditions and dry others, but I move the older ones when the missus spots the maggots dropping onto the carpet.
I also use the bench outside to dry bigger specimens in wind and full sun (ha ha) but they blow away, so thats sorted that one then.
Not very scientific...................
Cheers
Ken

Ken | I started off that way Ken
I bought the dryer after I had a clean up and found hundreds of dried fungi (OK, some were a bit mouldy, but hey the possibility of another fungus ) remains behind the radiators

best regards,
Andreas | I hope you are not being serious Andreas . . . . if you are you have no right to call yourself Mollisia
of course one of the great advantages of the 'small fungi' is that - in their many guises - you can study them 365 days a year . . . .
I suspect I have just walked into an open goal
Chris
