| | | Re: a little furry fungus for id, please Is it perhaps just a fine detailed shot of Stereum hirsutum ? They are orange like the underside here, when young, but the 'hirsute' bit develops later on I think, so I'm a little lost.
I'm not even sure if it grows on bark ! Probably the effect of all that Camembert cheese where you are.

Well, I don't know if it's that or not. It was very pale on the top - which is how I came to notice it. It was quite small too - each lobe being no more than about 1.5cm.
I couldn't even [i]see[i] the hairs on it until I looked at the photo on the screen.
Guess the only way to find out would be to go back and see if I can find it (and the Camambert - though I suspect it's more of a good Roquefort apart from the colour) again. I checked the images online and - I'd say it was too pale. I couldn't see the underside with the naked eye, so wonder if the orange colour might be a trick of the light.
If you could see what the weather is doing out there at the moment, you'd not be keen to go digging around in the undergrowth either. I'm back to the UK for a week tomorrow, so I guess it will either have to wait - or we'll simply never be sure.
Thank you for your idea. I'd never have found that in the book.
