| | | Bracket on ash stump assistance please I would really appreciate some input on this bracket please. It doesn`t fit any of my usual suspects. Incidentally; the said ash stump has been very productive for a couple of years inc; Coprinus atramentarius and Polyporus squamosus.
Cheers

| | | Re: Bracket on ash stump assistance please This is little more than a guess really, but it has what to me looks like the overall "Inonotus" type of general look about it.

Neil. | interesting - that was my first thought - I have collected it before, though not recently; it's certainly not an Inonotus
what we could do with is a neat vertical section through the fungus, cut with a sharp knife/scalpel

| | | Re: Bracket on ash stump assistance please This is good stuff!; thanks for discussion so far. I wonder if it will turn out to be Trametes gibba? but I thought the pores might be too small and I`ve never seen it with so many overlapping tiers before. However; I seem to remember seeing some brackets with green algae on another part of this stump and I will be back in the morning to check for any further development and to take a piece for section.
Cheers

| | | Re: Bracket on ash stump assistance please I only said Bjerkandera because it had that look to it. I have heard about B.adusta being slow to turn grey on the underside before so that is always a possibility, but this is so different I thought B.fumosa was in with a chance.
We eagerly await a good close up photo of a freshly cut (with very sharp knife) cross section to see if there is a dark line between the pore layer and white flesh which would confirm it to be B.fumosa - but as this is usually found on Willow, I'm beginning to have doubts.
Neil.
EDIT: Spelt fumosa right !
Just checked the FRDBI and there have only been 4 records on Fraxinus since 2002, so B.fumosa is in with a chance still.

Chris | I would not know what else to suggest for this particular group of white tiered clusterd small brackets, fumosa not limited to willow either FYI and IME much larger than adusta. I think its a general white rotter (precurser to Trametes gibbosa) but on some trees can be mildly parasitic of weakend cambium on Ailanthus chestnut and beech.

| | | Re: Bracket on ash stump assistance please I had another look at the site and the issue was "clouded" a bit by a sharp frost. However; I got some more pics and its still not clear to me but I don`t think its remotely like T gibbosa.
Cheers
