Wow I saw some very big Shaggy Ink Caps today and boy were they dripping ink! There were big patches of them near a landfill site.
What is the inky bit please?

Rather than just allow the spores to float away on the wind the ink cap uses "deliquesce" ie it rots away and it is this mechanism that distributes the spores.

Ah thanks for that all of you. So I suppose thats one of the reasons for the patches of this fungi? It won't disperse very much by the wind.

A few years back (October 2007) I came across a big field of these: I have never seen anything like it before or since! 
I think the field had been used for polo, judging from the markings in the grass but whether that had any influence on the fungus I have no idea! Looked amazing though.
