It's that clavate stem that made it all so confusing. There's a number of photographs of other Lyophyllum species on the MycoDB website that all looked fairly similar as well.

Andreas - it's a really nice painting, you have a talented wife. It would be really great to be able to produce things like that to illustrate interesting finds. I have no artistic talent so will have to stick to photographs.

yes, there are many similar Lyophyllum species.
One of them is also Lyophyllum rhopalopodium, for which the tremendous inflated stipe base is significant. It can be found in thermophilic Quercus- and Fagus-forests.
