| | | Sparassis crispa on Oak? I found what I thought was Sparassis crispa about a week ago.
Trouble is it's growing about a metre up on a dead oak tree. (definitely not a pine)
Here are two shots taken on my phone. One from a week ago and one taken today.
Could anyone help me please, either by correcting my ID or giving an explanation as to the host tree? |

| | | Re: Sparassis crispa on Oak? It's an Oak tree for sure. In one image Oak leaves can be seen on the ground (although that's not conclusive in itself). |

I'm fairly sure about the oak tree bit!
It's the fungus I need some help with!
Any thoughts on that, and it's presence on the Oak? |

| | | Re: Sparassis crispa on Oak? Sorry, no. I do come across fully grown Sparassis from time to time but don't recall specimens like yours.
There are some veritable fungi folk on here, one should be along soon. |

| | | Re: Sparassis crispa on Oak? Hi Monkey Lugs and welcome to WAB
As far as I know Sparassis crispa is only found on conifer so this could possibly be Sparassis laminosa, especially if Oak!
Nice find and worth going back with the camera!

| | | Re: Sparassis crispa on Oak? It's certainly odd that it's not at the base of the tree Mike
All the more reason to go back and take a camera image!

| | | Re: Sparassis crispa on Oak? Thanks for the suggestions. Tremella foliacea looks pretty good to me.
The texture was very much that of a jelly fungus.
Yet another knock back for my confidence on the ID front then. hhuupphh!
How does it rate on the interesting fungus scale? |

| | | Re: Sparassis crispa on Oak? I would now accept this is more likely to be Tremella foliacea, but even then, this is still unusual as most records seem to be from a fallen branch or even the whole trunk lying on the ground, not on a trunk still standing and 1 metre up at that !
It would be an interesting record to send off to Kew with those details.

| | | Re: Sparassis crispa on Oak? I've only ever seen Tremella foliacea in the 'horizontal' position.
Perhaps we should report the 'angular' characteristics of fungi we find
