| | | C. gibba vs. L flaccida having followed a few conversations on here, and had a few head scratching moments I've been trying to get these two down to visual ID.
For the first time yesterday I think I had one of each in front of me together... So (Ken Burgess!) Am I right in thinking that I have C gibba on the left and L flaccida on the right?
Otherwise I'm giving up on these two until I have microscopy down. |

Sorry I`m not Ken but as a macro mycologist, I may be able to offer some sympathy IMO they look like the same species but which one, is another question. Your pictures are very good and show some slight differences in hue, however; Clitocybe are notoriously difficult without microscopic detail and even then there are overlapping criteria. Additionally your specimens are quite advanced in their development and the colour may have faded. The stems of Lepista are sometimes helpful as a diagnostic pointer.
Cheers
Pete

It was another thread particularly that I was thinking of when I mentioned Ken, as he laid out some visual/macroscopic characteristics that could help you to identify them. Particularly the cap cuticle, which seemed very different in the sorts of ways he'd described on these two specimens.
If some people can differentiate between them by eye, there's no reason I can't I figured, just trying to get as familiar with both as possible! |

If that is small papilla I see on the cap, both are Lepista flaccida.
Time to consider that scope

John | Scope on its way by way of a birthday present from the familly. Going to a foray/ID session in London with a friend on Sunday in hopes of trying a few out and getting some advice...
As for the papilla, nothing noticable on either! They did seem quite different, but then I've seen L nuda recently in the same ring (ALWAYS around holly!) that friends have been incapable of believing are the same species... Back to the drawing board! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
