General identification books / field guides I’d recommend would be: -
• Mushrooms, (Roger Phillips) – 384 pages. Published by Macmillan (2006).
• Encyclopedia of Fungi of Britain and Europe, (Michael Jordan) – 384 pages. Published by Francis Lincoln (2004).
The above mentioned books are too large for the pocket, but would be OK for carrying in a rucksack or bag. Both are regarded “must have's” by fungi enthusiasts.
Probably the two best pocket sized guides are: -
• Complete Guide to British Mushrooms & Toadstools, (P.Sterry & B.Hughes) – 383 pages. Published by Collins (2009).
• Mushrooms & Toadstools of Britain and Europe, (A.Gminder & T.Bohning) – 320 pages. Published by A&C Black, Blacks Nature Guides (2007).
A definite “must” to look out for in the second hand market is the out of print: -
• Mushrooms and Toadstools of Britain and Europe, (R.Courtecuisse and B.Duhem) – 480 pages. Published by Collins. (First released in 1995, certain taxonomy changes have occurred in the interim, and the book has colour illustrations rather than photos.
Nevertheless, if you can find one, it is a superb book, worthy of being in any fungi enthusiast’s library).
Of course there are many more to be found, including some very expensive specialist volumes, but the ones mentioned are all well regarded, and will provide a good introduction to the subject.
Regards,
Mike.
