| | | Several fungi species growing inside my hedgehog pen for ID please I found these fungi growing inside one of my hedgehog pens (my other pens have no fungus growing in them). There were several troops of them dotted about in there. Silver Birch trees are nearby and the fungi were growing amongst grass, moss and leaf mold.
In the picked specimen photos, the cap of no.1 felt velvety, no.2 was ridged, and no.3 felt slimy, if that helps.
I took a spore print of all three samples and the results are as follows, in same order as per picked specimen photos:
1. Brownish
2. Brownish
3. None (?white)
In-situ photos:
[It looks like they’ve all been nibbled too - the nibbling is far too delicate for it to be the work of a hedgehog, so I’m guessing wood mouse!] |

| | | Re: Several fungi species growing inside my hedgehog pen for ID please The middle one is a Pholiotina (Conocybe), possibly P filaris or P rugosa, but they do need checking under the microscope to get to species level, as there are a few that look very similar.
I think you must be feeding your hogs too well ... see Hedgehogs ate my Hebeloma crustuliniforme
I'm thinking Hebeloma for the other two of yours ...

| | | Re: Several fungi species growing inside my hedgehog pen for ID please Always worth giving any finds a good sniff to see if they have any unusual smells. Hebeloma as a genus tends to have interesting smells that help to pinpoint the genus, although getting to species is much more complicated.

| | | Re: Several fungi species growing inside my hedgehog pen for ID please Thanks Melanie and Ken . I’m more than happy to have them identified just to genus level (something I tried to do but couldn’t even manage that! ).
Ken, I’m on the tail-end of a head cold so have temporarily lost my sense of smell Quote:

the Hebeloma should be Hebeloma mesophaeum.
best regards,
Andreas
