| | | Help please - pos. A. augustus Is it possible that this as A. augustus ..
This second image shows a slightly older fruiting body along the one shown above.
Growing next to path in a conifer plantation, about 6cm across the cap and about the same in height. There was no discernible smell to me but Phillips has A. augustus as 'bitter almonds'. The taste was 'mushroomy'. From the second image the spores appear dark brown.
Any help gratefully received, JohnB

| | | Re: Help please - ps. A. augustus I think this is A.silvaticus despite no signs of any reddening.
Shame you never thought to 'damage' one, but then again, we are told to handle with care for fear of destroying important characteristics.
It does look very close to A.augustus, but the jizz just isn't there for me, and with no smell/taste of almonds, I feel safe in ruling this out.
Neil.
With no signs of a bulbous base to the stem, there is also the possibility this could be A.langei - Scaly Wood Mushroom

I only took a small piece to taste and didn't really look for any colour change so this is something that I will keep in mind for future reference to help towards ID.

I like to think I'm slowly catching up with Ken, but to be honest ... no chance
