| | | ID help if poss with various fungi in lawn We were struck today with the variety of fungi in the 'lawn' (weedy, unfed area we mow), and wondered if any can be named from photos. These are some of the more 'distinctive' examples. I hope size is apparent from the neighbouring moss and grass blades. This kind is slimy and smells earthy, and is growing near a pine tree ( Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca came up when I googled, but don't look right?)
These were underneath a gate and I knocked several caps off accidentally:
These are very small and compact - caps say from 5mm to 20mm:
Just as bright, but reddish orange, with ribbed stalks:
Plus puffballs about the size of small conkers:
And lastly this, which is widespread and has been around for some time, in patches usually about the size of a hand, or smaller: Thanks for any help! |

from the top
the first one looks like a Hebeloma (difficult genus ) - it certainly isn't Hygrophoropsis - Googling can be very dangerous
second one is an ink-cap, species uncertain
third one a Hygrocybe - possibly H. insipida (I need to post something myself re a very similar waxcap I found recently and was trying to decide between H. ceracea and H. insipida . . . . I had recourse to looking at spores though)
fourth one is a Laccaria, again you would need to look at the spores, but I would suspect L. proxima
I would say that the fifth one was Lycoperdon nigrescens (though Ditiola might have a different opinion )
finally Thelephora terrestris earth-fan
cheers
Chris

| | | Re: ID help if poss with various fungi in lawn Thanks Chris! That's terrific and I shall really enjoy looking up all those names and trying to get a feel for some of the features that distinguish them.
It's true that googling can be very dangerous, but I always think you have to try a bit first!
Thanks again - much appreciated! |

Thanks again - much appreciated! | something tells me your lawn has a bit of history to it (no bad thing at all) and is no recent creation?
Chris

| | | Re: ID help if poss with various fungi in lawn I do like that description, 'a bit of history to it', sounds much better than scrubby or neglected! In truth, on a dry, free-draining slope to a cliff, with no weeding or feeding for 25 years, there's not a lot of grass left - but instead we have plenty of mining bees and chafer beetles and other such (and, although we'd never really noticed before, fungi!) Thanks again! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
